I tried to pass out watermelon three times last week. It was fair week, and my chamber of commerce duties called. Wednesday night, I called the boss at exactly 6:45 to ask where I should be.
Her response, "I give up, where should you be?" After that, I realized I had the wrong night.
Thursday night, I showed up promptly at 6:55, most of the work had been done thanks to co-conspirators and the watermelon was flowing. I looked across the street, and there was a woman with five children. They were all sitting on this bright green bench against the backdrop of a white barn. Yes, every one of them was eating watermelon. No, I did not have my camera, and I am still sick about it. After they were done, she proceeded to go down the line and clean each face. One of the younger children also had his knee cleaned where the juice had dribbled down. I tried really hard not to cry.
Then the rain came, and we had to go home...unfortunately we still had half our supply of watermelons left.
Friday night, I got there around 7, to find that everything was once again a go. Of course, I had my camera. But no cute watermelon pictures. So sad.

I can't think of the number of times this has happened to me.......and now that I have a BIG camera, I often decide that I don't want to lug it around, and then later I regret it.
